The article examines current generation mechanism in underground steel pipeline cathodic protection against corrosion. Corrosion tests of steel pipes buried in soils with different physico-chemical characteristics have revealed the necessity to consider simultaneous partial electrochemical reactions occurring on the cathodically protected surface when selecting the potentials of steel pipeline cathodic protection.
