Keywords: gas pipe-lines, corrosion, leakage, protection

The article looks at the underlying causes of the increase in the number of leakages of large-size gas pipelines (720 mm and more) as a result of stress corrosion cracking (SCC).
SCC is most likely to occur in the presence of the following main factors: high steel strength,
underground operation of gas pipeline, peculiarities of interaction between isolation coating and cathodic protection systems.
The article puts forward a new method of protecting large-size underground gas pipelines against SCC, namely, applying anodic metal coatings with additional electrodes in combination with corrugated surface coatings and inhibited fillers.
