A new mechanism of anodic dissolution of chromium has been proposed and experimentally proved. The mechanism differs from those proposed earlier in that the initial stages of the process are in equilibrium and proceed with the participation of adsorbed water molecules. The final stage consisting in the oxidation of adsorbed Cr2+ ions to Cr3+ is a limiting one.
